Grimes Running

GRANOLAPARK —

Dear Readers,

Seth Grimes is back in politics!

Grimes is running for Takoma Park’s Ward 1 council seat. The current councilmember Josh Wright announced recently that he will not seek reelection.

So far, Grimes is the only announced candidate. More candidates may announce at the city’s Nominating Caucus October 4. The city election is on November 8.

Grimes has a Facebook site and a Twitter feed, but as of yet, no web site dedicated to the candidacy. On his Facebook page he says he prefers the social network media because it is more interactive.

He also has a couple of “Who Am I” videos on his Facebook site – interviews and statements he’s made since 2007. Grimes has been heavily involved in civic issues for a decade or more. He served on the TASDI committee, the findings of which have guided city policy regarding double taxation for the past 6 years. TASDI stands for Residents’ Committee on Tax and Service Duplication Issues.

Grimes ran for mayor in 2005 against incumbent Kathy Porter. It was one of the most contentious election battles in the last two elections. Porter won that contest with around 60% of the vote.

The question on many Takoma Park observer’s minds is: now that he is a candidate, will Grimes continue to host his biannual election-results prediction contest?

  1. I met Grimes a few years ago at a town festival at the elementary school on Piney Branch. He told me he was for cutting city services that were redundant with what Montgomery County would provide anyway. Every ounce of interest in his face drained away when I told that I wasn’t a homeowner, but a renter.

I know the facts of life….but he should really learn how to feign some interest and be more gracious in those situations.

On the plus side, he stays very involved in all sorts of civic stuff.

I don’t know anything else about him.

What should people watch out for?
