GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM HOPES TO STAY HOT — BOYS TEAM HOPES TO FINISH STRONG

The Montgomery Blair High School Basketball squads will be busy this week. Both the Boys and Girls have three games scheduled over the course of five days. The Girls have had a much better season so far, having won 13 games and lost 3. In contrast, the Boys record is 4 and 12.

On February 7, the teams will host Clarksburg for a Boys/Girls double header. The Boys game will begin at 5:15 p.m., with the Lady Blazers contest tipping off at 7 p.m.

Two days later, the Blazers will travel to Kennedy for a make-up game that was originally scheduled for February 3. The Kennedy game will also be a Boys/Girls double-header with the boys game beginning at 5:15 p.m. and the Girls taking the floor at 7 p.m.

The Lady Blazers could clinch a Montgomery County 4A East Division Championship with a win on Kennedy’s home floor.

Both the Boys and Girls will conclude their regular seasons the next night when Northwest travels to Blair for Senior Night. The Boys game will begin at 5:15 p.m. with the Girls game starting at 7 p.m.

WRESTLERS PIN THE COMPETITION

The Blair Wrestling Team finished their 2011-2012 regular season in dominating fashion. The Blazers, who had unmistakably taken their share of lumps on the mat early in the season, ended strong — introducing two of their last three opponents to the gymnasium lights.

On January 31, the Blair grapplers took their show on the road, venturing to the home mats of the Wheaton Knights. The Blazers found themselves celebrating on the way home, having walloped Wheaton 67-6. Four days later, Blair returned home to play host to Flowers and Parkdale. The Blazers didn’t disappoint their hometown faithful, splitting the wrestling matinee with one loss and one win, the latter coming against a strong Flowers wrestling unit.

The Blazer Wrestling Team did not qualify to compete in the Dual Meet Wrestling Region Tournament beginning on Wednesday, February 8. However, the time away could do wonders for the members of the squad who will compete in the individual portion of the Maryland Wrestling Championship. The down time will allow returning state qualifier Billy Saturo to recover from a head injury that placed the senior captain on the shelf for the latter portion of the season. Saturo had accumulated an imposing 24-2 record before the injury.

BOCCE TEAM ROLLS ON

The Blair Bocce Ball Team continues to beat local competition, posting a 7-1 regular season record, en route to capturing the Montgomery County East Division Championship.  The team, in just its second year, has captured division titles each season. Last year, the Blazers also claimed the Maryland Bocce Ball State Championship for their division.

The team will begin their second straight state title quest at County Regionals on February 18 at Wooten. Dates for the State Championships have not yet been announced.

To accomplish its goals, the team will rely heavily on the experience of coach, John Haigh III. Haigh has been the school’s only bocce coach in the program’s short history.  Haigh tabs a trio of two-year varsity contributors in John Scott, Ben Achilles and Huong Tran as key components to the team’s success.
