The Silver Spring Town Center is holding its fourth annual Silver Spring Blues Festival on June 16 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. To help build anticipation, the festival kicks off with the first annual “Silver Spring Blues Week”, which runs from June 8 to June 16. It consists of performances by blues artists like Snakehead Run and Patty Reese.
Also during the Silver Spring Blues Week, various eateries like Abyssinia, Austin Grill, and The Society Lounge, will be having food and drink specials.
“The first-ever Silver Spring Blues Week seeks to expand blues music throughout the downtown Silver Spring area by hosting live music in local restaurants and cafes. Silver Spring Blues Week also supports Silver Spring’s small business by promoting their menus, products and services,” according to Alan Bowser, President of the Silver Spring Town Center, Inc.
The festival will feature a range of acoustic and electric blues performances from several regional bands. The emcees for the event will be Majic 102.3’s Cortney Hicks and WPFW-FM’s Ida Campbell.
Performances will be broken up into two stages, one at the Fountain Stage on Ellsworth Drive and the other at the Market Stage on Veterans Plaza at the Fenton Street Market. The Market Stage will have performances from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., while the Fountain Stage will have performances from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.
“We started the Silver Spring Blues Festival to highlight the extraordinary talent of the metro Washington, DC, but particularly Montgomery County blues musicians. We sought to provide free public performances of a musical genre not often heard in the area. We saw the Festival as a way to entertain Silver Spring residents, educate the public about the most authentic American musical form, and to support local businesses,” said Bowser.
Performers on the Market Stage include: Cooking with Gas, Gina DeSimone & the Moaners, Sheryl Sears & Friends, Swampcandy, and The Archie Edwards Blues Ensemble.
Performers on the Fountain Stage include: Warner Williams, School of Rock, Nate Foley & FLLD, Moonshine Society, Fast Eddie & the Slowpokes, DC Blues Society Band featuring Ayaba Bey, the Unruly Blues Band, and Clarence “The Blues Man” Turner.
