PHOTOS: Takoma Park walks to school


Children, parents, teachers, Takoma Park council members and the police chief all walked to school Wednesday.

Oct. 9 was International Walk to School Day, an annual event that promotes the benefits of walking to school.

Participating schools were Takoma Park Elementary School, Piney Branch Elementary School, Takoma Park Middle School, Rolling Terrace Elementary School and East Silver Spring Elementary School. Walk to School Day is a Takoma Park Safe Routes to School Program.

Takoma Park Elementary School students, parents and staff will met at the Community Center on Maple Avenue. They were joined by mayor Bruce Williams, councilmember Terry Seamens, and Takoma Park Police chief Alan Goldberg.

Local photographer Mei Mei Chang and her 7 year-old son participated in and took photos of the walk to Takoma Park Elementary School. She also took some of the Piney Branch Elementary School walkers.

Mei Mei received her Master of Fine Arts in Photography from Ohio University 2002. As a mixed media and installation artist, Mei Mei explores various media to bridge her internal and external worlds. She is a lifelong student of the human psyche, fascinated by the mind's ability to focus on details great and small without limits. Using her internal symbols, she creates rich visual images that are both highly personal and accessible by all. Mei Mei has received numerous awards and residencies, including at the Vermont Studio Center, Great River Art Association, the ARCH Residency at Honfleur Gallery, the Montgomery College Artist Residency, and second place in the Contemporary South Exhibition. Mei Mei's work was selected in the Studio Visit Magazine Volume 10, 2010 and was featured in The Studio Visit in June 2011.
