GRANOLAPARK: Inauguration Day

Dear Readers,

Oh, you didn’t know it was INAUGURATION DAY?

Yes, it is! The Takoma Park City Council gets inaugurated today. Out with the old, and in with the . . . old. All the incumbents were reelected, mostly by default in challenger-less elections.

Even the Mayor Pro-Tem is the same – councilmember Terry Seamens. He’s the guy who takes over the mayor’s council meeting duties when His Honor Bruce Williams is not there.

Ward 1 councilmember Seth Grimes was unable to attend. Mayor Bruce Williams announced that Grimes fell and had been hospitalized earlier in the day. His injuries were not serious, he said.

The council met as the “old” council, then got sworn in, then re-met as the “new” council.

They did a little business as the new council. Mayor Williams announced a new way to do public comments. The public can make comments on a “voting item” – an item on the agenda – at the beginning of a meeting, rather than waiting until the item comes up  later that evening.

He also pledged to keep public comments to the 3 minute limit, and he urged the councilmembers to keep their own comments short.

Each councilmember made The Required Speech. You know, “I’d like to thank my constituents and my family blah blah blah.”

Then everybody had cake and went home.

Why isn’t cake served at EVERY meeting?

Thanks for quoting my comments fairly accurately, except that you left out one of the “blahs.”
