So many holiday events, so little time

It’s that holiday time of year, and there are a variety of events to check out. Here is a sampling of Takoma Park and Silver Spring, MD holiday performances and sales.

Friday, December 12
Annual Holiday Concert and Dinner, 7 – 10 p.m.

People of all ages are invited to attend this festive event featuring choruses from local elementary schools as they perform holiday favorites.  You’ll receive a hot dinner, including dessert.  In addition, get your child’s picture taken with Santa.  Dinner is $5 per person, this include a Santa photo.

Saturday, December 13
Takoma Park Holiday Art Sale, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

The Takoma Park Community Center will host the annual Takoma Park Art Sale, now in its eighth year, featuring more than 30 selected artists.

Photographer Julius Kassovic and Potter Orion McCarthy, considered favorites from last year, will return. New artists this year include painter and playwright Tom Block, glass artist Charles Karadimos, and ceramic artist Chaya Richman.

Featured artwork will include painting, photography, ceramics, jewelry, wearable art and more.

Holiday Book Sale, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Friends of Takoma Park Maryland Library
As part of the Takoma Park Art Sale new books for children, youth, and teens will be available.  Used books will be available for adults.  All books will be sold at reasonable prices.

The Takoma Park Community Center will also host this all-female vocal ensemble performing traditional music from Bulgaria and Eastern Europe in concert.

Orfeia’s collection spans the rich and assorted musical traditions of Eastern Europe, Bulgaria, Russia, Georgia and the Balkans, and gives voice to the rich and diverse sounds of the Balkans.

These holiday-inspired workshops will be lead by Cheryl Moody at Art Spring.
Each participant will leave the workshop with four gifts for giving, and the skills needed to make more at home. A variety of “found treasure” beads will be selected by the instructor, and arranged in kits for a variety of styles and holiday occasions.
Each participant will receive a discount card for 10% off their next purchase.

Deck Out Downtown
Downtown Silver Spring
Looking for fun to help deck out this holiday season? Downtown Silver Spring can help you get you into the holiday spirit.   Every Saturday throughout the holidays from November 29 – December 20 there will carolers, and performances by local student groups.

Take your holiday photo in front of Silver Symphony, downtown Silver Spring’s one of a kind Christmas tree.  This creation by public artist, Karl Unnasch, is a 35 foot tall holiday “tree” structure comprised of bells, chimes, pinwheels, and ribbons.

Takoma Park Silver Spring (TPSS) Co-Op Cookie and Bread Contest, 2 p.m.
Contestants will compete for first, second, and third prize gifts in this battle of the sweets.  There will entries in both traditional and gluten free categories.  Judging will be based on taste and appearance.

Thursday, December 18

Morris Mummers Play, 6:00 p.m.

Takoma Old Town Gazebo plaza

The Foggy Bottom Morris Men present the eerie Abbots Bromley Horn Dance, some lively “border” dances, and a traditional mummers play. They promise “old jokes, bad acting and worse singing.”

Winter Solstice Celebration, 6:30 p.m.

This annual winter solstice celebration is a Takoma Park tradition.  The event will start with drummer Bill Jenkins providing percussion instruments for a audience participant drumming circle.

Then, at 7:30 p.m. the Foggy Bottom Morris Men will perform dances and a mummers play, similar to their 6:00 PM presentation at the Old Town Gazebo.

Saturday, December 20

More than 60 venders will be featured, along withy live music to spread lots of holiday cheer.  Products available from market retailers will include art, bath and body products, jewelry, kids toys, baby clothes and more.

After the market comes to a close, stick around for a holiday party at HOLIDAZE featuring holiday pop-up shops in the gallery space at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center.

Christmas Celebration, 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 6 p.m.
Main Street Takoma
Takoma Park Sanctuary Choir will sing portions of Handel’s MESSIAH during their morning services.  Chamber orchestra and soloist will accompany them.  In the evening, Takoma Park Celebration Choir & Children’s Choir will be presenting contemporary renditions of Handel’s MESSIAH along with MetroPraiz, Clay, and other guests.
