PHOTOS: This morning’s snapping turtle

Both Photographer Mei Mei Chang and a snapping turtle were out for a walk around 8:20 AM this morning, May 28, on the Sligo Creek hiker-biker trail.

Ms Chang reports the large turtle was moving slowly in the direction of Maple Avenue by the Washington Adventist Hospital. She shared her phone-camera images with The Voice.

The Voice’s resident biologist Mary Ellsworth identified it as a common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina).“Big one – stay back,” she warned.

But Ms Chang said “the turtle was really peaceful.” It gave no warning hiss when she got close to take photos, she said.
