MAR 2 — Two apparent house burglars were arrested by Takoma Park police Tuesday morning, March 2, after chasing one of them into a wooded area where he was caught with the assistance of Prince George’s County police and a Montgomery County canine unit.

It seems their burglary was interrupted by the arrival of city police. Items taken from inside a Sycamore Avenue home were found scattered in the yard.

Police saw a man exiting a Sycamore Avenue driveway on the 7000 block. Police stopped him and found “items of evidentiary value” in his possession, according to a police statement released March 2, 2016. The man was taken into custody. City police were responding to a resident’s tip that a couple of men wearing hoodies were looking into homes in the Woodland Avenue area – one block east of Sycamore Avenue.

March 2 was a busy day for Takoma Park police. There were two other incidents. One resulted in charges of Possession of a Firearm, Transporting a Firearm within a Vehicle and Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance. The other resulted in charges of Assault on a Police Officer; Fleeing and Eluding Police; and Possession of “Crack” Cocaine with Intent to Distribute. More details in the Voice’s weekly Police Report.

Around the same time – 9:50 a.m. – an officer in a marked police vehicle spotted a suspicious car parked on Woodland Avenue. When the officer switched on his emergency signals the vehicle took off and turned right onto Ethan Allen Avenue (MD State Rte. 410). The officer pursued. The fleeing vehicle’s driver tried to take the next right onto Prince Georges Avenue – back into the residential neighborhood. However, he struck a concrete wall, according to the police report.

He reversed from the wall, striking the police cruiser behind him. The subject then bailed from the vehicle and fled on foot towards the Washington McLaughlin School at the intersection of Poplar Avenue and New Hampshire Avenue. The police officer pursued him, also on foot.

At this point several Prince George’s County Police officers arrived to assist in the search for the subject. A Montgomery County Sheriff canine tracking unit responded as well.

Police set up a perimeter. A Takoma Park police officer spotted a man matching the description of the wanted subject exit from Gude Avenue on to Poplar Avenue near the intersection of Poplar and New Hampshire Avenue. A Prince George’s County officer attempted to apprehend the subject, but he fled into the woods on the other side of Poplar Avenue. All police units converged on the wooded area behind the Jiffy Lube on New Hampshire Avenue where the man was found and taken into custody.

Because he had some minor abrasions an ambulance took the subject to the Washington Adventist Hospital. The hospital later released him to the Takoma Park Police.

Both subjects were arrested, charged accordingly and transported to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit. Arrested were Alain Teke Yan Acha, 19, of Lanham, Maryland, and Henok Tesfa Ayana, 20, of Takoma Park, Maryland, for 1st Degree Assault on a Police Officer, Fleeing and Eluding, 1st Degree Burglary, and other offenses.

The vehicle driven by the subject was impounded pending a search warrant.
